Van Riper & Nies relies on personal attention, hard work and dedication in bringing justice to injured Longshoremen...

The attorneys at Van Riper and Nies represent employees in connection with workers' compensation claims filed with the Department of Labor under the Longshore & Harbor Workers' Compensation Act (33 USC 901 et. Seq.)

The Longshore and Harbor Workers’ Compensation Act (LHWCA) mandates payment for disability or death of a Longshoreman arising from an injury occurring on the navigable waters of the U.S., including any adjoining terminal, pier, dock, wharf or any other type of adjoining area normally used by an employer to load/unload, repair or build a ship.

Under the LHWCA, Longshoremen hurt while loading, unloading or otherwise handling cargo are engaged in maritime employment will be covered under the LHWCA if they are engaged in intermediate steps of moving cargo between vessel and land transportation, as well as shipbuilding and ship repair. Specifically, covered employees include stevedores, longshore checkers, crane operators,  terminal workers, shipbuilders, marine construction workers, vessel repair workers, among others.
